Greg Sowards - My life experiences have provided me with lessons on the purpose and function of government. I believe Article 1 Section 8 of the Constitution limits the powers of the U.S. Congress to guarantee efficiency and productivity through checks and balances. I look forward to the opportunity as a U.S. Senator to defend the Rule of Law, to help pass and ratify a Balanced Budget Amendment, to properly interpret the Commerce Clause and to restore respect for the value of the Tenth Amendment. I’m a small business owner, a husband, a father and a grandfather. I was raised in New Mexico, graduated from Los Lunas High School and New Mexico Military Institute JC. At NMMI, I learned the importance of sticking to my principles, solving problems, being comfortable with who I am and facing challenges with a smile. At 20 years of age, in January of 1970, I enlisted in the Army after training I was stationed in Korea to provide support for operations in that area of the Pacific. In Korea, I learned, first-hand, the meaning of sacrifice and the discipline of self-reliance. It was during my time away from the United States that I became aware of the sanctity of our Constitution, the liberty that it affords and the necessity of preserving our Republic from tyranny’s many faces. When I returned to the states after my service, I enrolled at the University of New Mexico where I met my wife Karen, and we started our family. We moved to Provo, Utah where I earned my teaching degree at Brigham Young University. In 1982, we started our first business – manufacturing exercise equipment. Our initial efforts were met with great success; however, by 1985, one-sided trade agreements, unfair taxes and over-regulation meant that we could buy imports from China for less money than we could buy raw materials at home. As our business began to slow down, I invented and patented a soccer training device called the Kwik Kik. We have sold tens of thousands of units all over the world, attracting the attention of soccer greats like Pele. I have a total of five U.S. Patents. Entrepreneurship and invention have always been the drivers of the American Dream. I am proud to say I have lived that dream as a small business owner. In 1987, Karen and I started a child care business in Las Cruces; we started by caring for 12 children in our home. We now care for over 700 children across 6 facilities and employ more than 80 people. In the past 24 years, we have been entrusted to care for thousands of children. Karen and I are proud of our family which includes our four sons and two daughters, four daughters in-law, two sons in-law, and 20 grandchildren. Like you, I have grown tired of making calls to deaf ears in Washington. The politicians we have been sending to Washington convince us they share our interests, but vote contrary to our wishes on behalf of special interests. If we want to change Washington we need to change the KIND of person we send to Washington, I am a different kind of candidate. To restore the promise of prosperity to this nation, Americans must send courageous leaders – not career politicians – to Washington. We need to send people to DC who share our core values and have not spent their life seeking the next office, who view life through a political lens while missing the lessons that real life teaches.
